The Last Star(The Last Star Trilogy #1)

Chapter 14

The house was dead silent. I looked for Granny everywhere and she was no where to be found. Most of these days she stayed in her room like a depressed teenage girl. I was supposed to play that part she was supposed to be the angry grandmother.

I knocked on her bedroom door. No answer. The door opened with a creak and there was Granny sitting on her bed with a laptop in her hands. I recognized that laptop that Granny found in the basement a few weeks ago.

“Granny, what are you doing?” I asked. She looked up and shut down the laptop.

“Nothing” she said and walked over to me and closed the door behind her.

I narrowed my eyes.

“Do you want a snack?” she asked.

“Sure” I replied.

Grandmothers are terrible liars or at least my grandmother is. I didn’t know that Granny could even use a laptop or anything modern. For example a toaster.

I did my homework at the kitchen table and while I did that I was trying to get the courage to tell Granny that I am not marrying Prince Alec.

“When’s Dad coming home?” I asked.

“I don’t know” Granny said “He’s working late and he has to make preparations for your wedding”

I nearly threw up at that. “About that....” I started “I can’t”

“Can’t what?” Granny asked.

I don’t know why I said that but I managed to cover it up. “Nothing” I said quickly “I don’t know why I said that”

Thankfully, Granny didn’t say anything. She seemed to be lost in her own thoughts. I’m still processing everything and I’m still shocked, I told myself. That’s the only reason I said that.

I hid in my room for the rest of the day and when I was sure Granny was asleep I snuck out. I would have ran away but I didn’t have anywhere to go.

Instead I went to The Tower in town. I was so mad I thought I might blow up Virgo with all the anger.

It was extremely cold, and the Tower was the tallest building in the kingdom. It after midnight so town was empty. I felt scared and alone. I wanted to cry. I felt a hand on my shoulder, I almost kicked the guy in the gut before I realized it was Lewis.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered loudly.

“I should say the same” he replied.

“Sorry” I said “I just freaked out a little”

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“Stargazing” He answered.

“Oh” I said “Me too”

“I can see that” Lewis said looking at the sky.

“Don’t you get lonely up here?” He asked.

“No” I answered “I have the Stars”

“Right”

I lit up Virgo and Lewis was conducting Sagittarius. It got colder and I felt raindrops on my face. Clouds covered the stars and now is probably a good time to head home.

“I should go now” I said “and you should too. It’s starting to rain and....”

Lewis was staring at the sky. I snapped my fingers in front of his face then he came down to Earth.

“What?” he said.

“Were you listening to me?” I said.

“Yeah, I was”

“What did I just say?” I asked.

“Okay, Annabelle. I was listening but I wasn’t paying attention” He said.

“All right then” I said “Bye”

I walked home slowly and by the time I got there I was half wet and I was probably going to catch a cold. I took off my boots before entering so there would be no evidence that I went out past my curfew.

I opened the door to Granny and Dad having a very loud conversation. I was in so much trouble, I thought. They found out I broke curfew. Granny’s eyes were red from no sleep which was weird because I was sure she was asleep. Dad’s hair was messy and his clothes were wrinkled.

“Where have you been?” Dad asked surprisingly very calm.

“I went to the Tower” I said.

“By yourself?” Granny said.

“No...my friend was with me” It was not a lie. Lewis was there with me.

I ran to my room and changed out of my wet clothes. Granny and Dad were now yelling so loudly I could here them from my bathroom.

“Mother” Dad yelled.

“Enough!” Granny shouted “I have been through too much and I am not going to suffer because of you”

I had no idea what they were talking about but I knew that Dad and granny never yelled at each other. And I knew it was a bad time but I had to tell Dad something important. I tip toed downstairs and Granny and Dad stopped talking...or shouting.

“Dad” I squeaked “Can we talk?”

He sighed “What about?”

I looked at Granny and she fixed me with a look that said, what now? What in Virgo am I doing? I thought. My mouth tasted like sand paper, I tried to swallow.

“Actually, never mind” I said and awkwardly walked to the kitchen for a glass of water.

I didn’t even wait for either of them to come and give me a pep talk, I went to bed which meant sleep and sleep meant dreams. I could hear Granny shouting on the top of her lungs.

I closed my eyes and found myself in the same place as my previous dream. Two voices were having a conversation.

“When is the prince to be married?” asked a weak voice.

“That is not confirmed but he is to marry that Virgo girl” replied someone.

“Then we should bring them here at last” the weak one said.

“Are you sure?” the other person sounded worried.

“The time has come” the other one coughed “We have to bring them together and get them prepared”

My dream faded and I was awake. The dream I had interested me. What had they been talking about? Who are they?

Breakfast was terrible. I had toast and a glass of water with fried fish. I also tried to talk to dad but I couldn’t find the right words and Granny kept interrupting.

I heard a knock on the door as I was zipping my boots. “Who could that be?” Granny said. She opened the door and someone said “Good morning Mrs. Virgo” it was Tristan “Is Annabelle home?”

Before Granny could reply I pushed past her and said “Yeah, I’m here”

“Good, we thought you would have left” Lyra sighed. I didn’t see her behind Tristan or Amara or Lewis.

“Bye Granny” I said and closed the door behind me.

“What are guys doing here?” I whispered.

“You know what?” Lewis said “What are we doing here?”

Amara punched his side. “Owww” he yelped.

“We thought we should walk to school together” Lyra said. I didn’t notice what she was wearing before but now that I did I realized she was dressed like she was going to a party.

“Are we going to school or a party?” I laughed at Lyra.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Lyra looked offended. She was wearing a sparkly top with blue jeans and her feet were covered with purple boots which matched the tips of her hair which were dyed violet. She was also wearing a purple coat.

“That’s not what I meant” I said quickly “You look amazing and very.....purple”

“Thank you” she batted her eyelashes.

“Why are you dressed like that?” Amara asked politely “Not that you look bad” she added quickly.

“I just thought I would dress differently during the last weeks of school” Lyra said.

“Yeah, I didn’t even think about that” I said.

“We have our final exams from tomorrow and then it’s graduation” Tristan said.

“You all are getting sad and depressing” Lewis said “We’re still going to be friends”

We started to walk now. “What’s our first exam anyway? Lewis asked.

Amara looked up from here book and said “We have Astronomy tomorrow”

“Boring” Lewis sighed as we took another turn.

“It’s sad” Lyra said in a small voice.

“I say again” Lewis said “We are still going to be friends even if Annabelle is moving away to a huge palace and....” Lewis stopped. I had to fight the urge to punch him in the face but Lyra punched him in the ribs.

“Don’t worry” I said “I’m supposed to go to the palace in a few days. We have time”

“That’s good news” Lyra bubbled.

We entered school looking like the most popular people there. Lyra looked stunning, Amara’s face was hidden behind her book, Lewis was smiling at every girl that we came across and Tristan looked calm and me...well I’m not sure what I looked like but I felt confident.

Part Two

“We are the Stars made conscious.

We’re crafted from our Constellations.

We have Stardust in our blood.

We are all made of Stars.

We are all Stardust”
