Chapter One Night 131

I shouldn’t have been doing this.

It was st**d and irresponsible in so, se many ways. To come to the room that Edwin had specified… It could only make our situation worse.

But when he had asked me to come, I couldn’t find it in me to say no. The very thought of being alone with him, for any reason, filled my entire body with a sense of hope and excitement. So I had gone.

I wore a simple black dress that fell mid-thigh, a dark denim jacket on top to keep out the autumn chill. My hair was loose down my back, and as an afterthought, I had put on a thin layer of floral perfume.

No one knew I was coming. I had told my friends that I would be turning in early tonight and that they could go out to the bar for our usual Friday night drinks without me. Then, once I was certain they were gone, I had slipped out of

my dorm.

And now here I was, making my way through the dimly lit campus, my heart pounding with each step:

The location that Edwin had given me was in the basement of an old building that was rarely used anymore aside from a few obscure classes. Mostly, it was used for storage. The back door was unlocked for the night workers, and snuck inside, glancing nervously over my shoulders every few feel.

Blissfully, there was no one around tonight. The campus was utterly quiet, students too busy at the bar in town to celebrate the first Friday of the semester to notice who was sneaking around campus.

I made my way down the stairs to the basement, my eyes scanning the hall as I crept around like some kind of burglar. Cobwebs lined the corners of the ceilings, crates were pushed up against the walls.

Edwin’s choice in location had been… creepy, to say the least. So much so that I suppressed a shudder as I made my way through the halls in search of the room number he had specified room 004.

Finally, I reached the door. My hands shook as I punched the code into a small panel on the handle: 5829. The lock clicked, and I pushed the door open, holding my breath.

What I saw inside made me

gasp.

What had, I assumed, once been nothing more than a storage room, had been transformed. A soft blanket was spread on the floor, surrounded by flickering candles. A small table held an array of delicious-looking food-I spotted some of my favorites, like strawberries and chocolate. A projector was set up against one wall. Pillows were piled on top of the blanket for us to lounge on.

It was warm. And inviting.

And most of all, Edwin stood in the center of it all with a nervous smile on his face.

“Surprise,” he said sofily.

“Edwin, what… how?” I stammered, still taking it all in. “This is… incredible.”

“I wanted to spend time with you without anyone finding out,” he said, stepping toward me-almost hesitantly, tentatively. “So I set up

This Hule date for us.”

I was still too stunned to speak, Edwin closed the distance between us, and his hand found mine. His touch sent a jolt

through me, causing my cheeks to instantly flush pink. He wore casual attire, a simple pair of dark trousers and a white t- shirt whose sleeves went taut around his muscular biceps.

And there was that cologne again smoke and something else. Something that I couldn’t quite identify as being anything other than uniquely him.

As he led me to the blanket, he explained, “This storage room is far from other people, with no security cameras around. It’s safe for us to be together here. I even hacked into the control panel and changed the lock code, so no one would be able to get in.”

“You did all this…. for me?” I asked, looking up at him.

“It’s the least I can do after making you feel that way in Paris.”

I swallowed hard at the mention of Paris. “It wasn’t your fault,” I muttered. “You couldn’t-”

“It was my fault. I should have woken you that day and said goodbye.” He lowered himself onto the blanket, tugging me along with him. I went after a moment’s hesitation and sat beside him. The blanket was plush and warm.

“So I was thinking,” he said, gesturing around us, “if you’d like, we could meet here once a week. Friday nights. Here, we’d be free from expectations. No one could interrupt us or judge us. Just you and me.”

I couldn’t speak-could only stare at him, wide-eyed, as the candle cast flickering shadows across his square jaw. In the dim light, his hair was so black it almost looked blue, although his gray eyes shone like the candles were flickering inside of them.

Edwin’s face fell slightly at my silence.

“If you don’t want to, I understand,” he started, inhaling sharply. “I know it’s not ideal, hiding away like this, but-‘

But I cut him off before I could finish. “Edwin. I threw my arms around his neck, inhaling his scent against his broad. shoulder. “I love it,” I said, my voice m**d by his shirt. “It’s perfect, Edwin. Really.”

Edwin let out a breath that sounded like relief. I felt his arms slip beneath my jacket, wrapping around my waist and tugging me close. My heart pounded like a war drum, but I relaxed against him as his hands rubbed circles on my lower back.

“I’m glad,” he breathed into my hair. “I was worried you wouldn’t like it.”

When we finally parted, breathless and a bit f**led, Edwin poured us each a glass of red wine. I took a sip, savoring the dry taste and the way it warmed me from the inside.

“I made all the food myself,” he said, gesturing to the spread waiting for us. “I hope you like it. There’s a little bit of everything.”

I picked up a chocolate covered strawberry, biting into it. The sweetness of the berry and the bittersweet dark chocolate exploded on my tongue, mingling perfectly with the flavor of the wine.

“It’s delicious,” I said, smiling at him. “I can’t believe you went to all this trouble.”

Edwin’s smile widened. To think that I was lucky enough to see the icy Alpha’s face split into such an expression where no one could make him smile before… “It’s no trouble at all,” he said. “Not for you.”

We spent the next few hours eating, watching movies on the projector, and just talking.

The world outside this room seemed to fade away, and it was just us. Just Edwin and Audrey. Not a human and a werewolf. Not a student and a professor. Not a lovestruck girl and an engaged man.

“Tell me something about yourself that I don’t know,” I said, curled up against Edwin’s side. The wine had fully hit me by now, making my tongue thick and my head heavy. I traced random patterns on his outstretched palm with my index finger, savoring the way each stroke made him shiver. He had stopped trying to hide it a little while ago.

He thought for a moment as he absently played with a strand of my hair. “I used to be terrified of thunderstorms as a kid,” he finally said. “My sister would always come and sit with me until they passed.”

I smiled at the image. “You and your sister really were as thick as thieves, weren’t you?”

“We were. Still are. What about you?” he asked, his breath tickling my car. “Any childhood fears?”

“Spiders,” I admitted, shuddering slightly at the thought. “Still hate them, actually. Can’t even look at pictures of them without getting creeped out.”

I shuddered again as I remembered the night that Linda’s friends had thrown one on me while I was going into my dorm. That night, in my dreams, Edwin had casually brushed the spiders off of me.

My shield.

As the night wore on and we finished the bottle of wine and another movie, I couldn’t decide whether I was more intoxicated by the alcohol or Edwin’s presence.

There was a scent coming off him that was driving me wild. It was familiar, comforting, and yet it stirred something primal inside of me. That damned cologne.

Before I could think better of it, I leaned in, ki**g him deeply. His lips were soft and warm against mine, tasting faintly of wine. He returned in kind, his fingers tangling in the fine hairs at the nape of my neck as he tugged me a little closer.

“You have to stop wearing that cologne,” I breathed against his mouth when we parted for air. “It makes me go crazy. I can barely think straight when I smell it.”

Edwin pulled back slightly, looking confused. His brow furrowed as he looked at me. “I’m not wearing cologne.

But I hardly heard him. The scent was overwhelming now, clouding my senses. All I could think about was how much I wanted him. It was like a physical ache, a need that consumed me entirely.

Without another thought, I threw myself at Edwin, my lips crashing against his with a desperate hunger. We fell to the blanket in a frenzied heap.

That night, I met the wolf inside of him again. And just like Paris, he was insatiable.

But so was I.
