Chapter A Gamble For Two 40

Chapter 40

The operating room was buzzing with activity as medical personnel flurried from one end to the other. "The blood is here!"

"Proceed with the blood transfusion!" someone ordered.

The corridor was empty when Gerald and Isadora arrived outside the operating room. Isadora even grabbed a pastrami sandwich on her way to the hospital in case Angelina was hungry.

"Ches, where are you? Don't tell me you've disappeared at a time like this!" Isadora said incredulously into her phone.

"I'm inside the operating room," came Chester's brisk reply.

"The operating room?" she repeated in surprise.

"There are some complications, but don't tell Dad. You should go and see Mom; she passed out after seeing all the blood," Chester said.

"Ches-"Isadora was about to press him for details when Chester hung up

Inside the operating room, Chester stared at Angelina's unconscious profile, then glanced over at the obstetrician carrying the baby to the deaning station. There was a snip of the scissors, followed by the clang of metal against metal Chester gripped Angelina's hard tightly as a bad feeling seized him.

"We have a problem. The patient has placenta accreta. "

Chester's fingers flexed and clenched around Angelina's, but he could not get a response her. She lay limply on the bed like a surgical dumny as the doctors wielded their scalpels and tools over her.

At that moment, a shudder went through him just as the coppery tang of blood filled the air once more. Angelina had been hooked up to an intravenous line, through which the pint of blood was pumped into her.

The doctors were bustling around, their faces drawn and grim. Chester carefully reached out to dab his thumb in water, then brushed it over Angelina's lips. "You'll be fine," he whispered, lowering his head to kiss her. "The baby's fine, and you will be too." "Stop the patient's bleeding! Bring it down!"

Chester felt as if someone had pinned him to the face of a cliff, forcing him to scramble against the pull of gravity.

A long and eerie beep rang out in the operating room. Chester watched with wide eyes as

Angelina flatlined.

The operating room descended into panic. "CPR Get her heartbeat back up!"

The baby began wailing in a corner of the room, and it seemed persistent. Occasionally, the crisp clatter of metal hitting the floor cut through the cacophony.

"Get her heartbeat up...

Chester lowered his gaze, his heart tightening to the point of causing pain as his tears fell on Angelina's colorless face. He dared not look at the monitor again after turning away from the flatline.

"You promised me you wouldn't leave me in this lifetime. Pull through this and I'll give you anything you want... Please... I've never begged anyone, but I'm begging you now..." he said the words so softly that he could hardly hear himself. Angelina dreamed while she was in oblivion.

She saw the original Angelina when she was still a kid walking down an alley. She watched as Emily brought home the young Angelina. She had changed into new clothes, but her skin was tanned as she followed Emily closely. She took in the busy streets that lined either side of her as she walked.

Angelina wanted to touch the child, but she stopped in her tracks after remembering how cruel and wicked the original Angelina was. But the little girl was a delicate thing, and her expression was dazed as she strolled through the streets with Emily.

Angelina stopped in her tracks and reached out to ruffle the little girl's hair, but her fingers grazed thin air.
