Fight for Me

Chapter Curiosity

Nicholas’ POV

I don’t understand what’s going on. And I don’t like not knowing.

So much of the other night doesn’t make sense.

The rogues’ attack seemed too strategic for it to be random. How the fuck did they even get past patrol? But they definitely weren’t expecting the camp crew to be there.

We lost two members. Both very young. But they all fought well, all things considered.

And then there’s Layla. She refused a check-up, but I just carried her to it anyway. She was covered in her own blood, yet the doctor said she was fine, - that she didn’t have a scratch on her.

What the fuck? Did she cough all the blood out?

She shrugged it off like it was nothing, but that was not nothing. I saw the state she was in. Her clothes were torn to shreds. And there wasn’t a scratch on her???

There is something she’s not telling me, I know it.

But seeing her in that state and the curiosity behind it has made my wolf and I paranoid as hell. I’m practically a stalker the way I constantly keep an eye on her 24/7.

And then there’s this whole thing with the shifters and Sebastian’s visit.

Vampires don’t like working with shifters. There’s definitely something going on there. And somebody brought it to my front step. But for Sebastian to make all that effort to come here so suddenly without notice, means he was desperate. This is personal for him too. Whoever these ‘employers’ are, they’re cooking up a real storm.

Third POV

Ever since the attack, Layla spent most of her time checking up on Cody. He wasn’t hurt too badly. Just lost a lot of blood. But he’s all good now.

He has been giving her the weird look every now and then, and so have many others.

“What?” Layla looks at him as they eat some snacks in the kitchen. “What’s with the look?”

Cody sits forward on the couch and looks at her.

“What happened out there Layla?”

She rolls her eyes as she has been for the past couple of days.

“I already told you.”

“Yeah, I know you said a wolf attacked you and you smashed it’s head in with a rock. We found its body. But something more happened, didn’t it? I could smell all your blood. Yet you’re the only one that came out of this without a mark on her.”

But she remains quiet.

“Where did all the blood come from Layla?” Cody is getting serious.

She huffs out a breath. “Cody,…..it’s complicated okay. I’ll tell you, one day, when I know how to talk about it. Can we leave it at that?”

He squints his eyes at her. “Fine. But tell me what’s going on with you and the Alpha.”

She freezes in her spot. “What? What do you mean?”

“The Alpha isn’t known to act like that about anyone. But he ran through the woods with just you in mind.”

“It’s probably just because I’m human.”

“That’s not it.” Cody shakes his head. “You’re just an employee here. You were left in my care anyway. So what is it?”

“Uhm,….I don’t know.”

“Try again.” He hums.

“Yeah. I’d like to know the answer to this too.” They both turn their head to Tyler standing in the doorway.

“Why is this such a big deal? He just checked on a human that was with his pack, and got caught in a rogue attack.”

Tyler chuckles. “Oh, Layla. The time you’ve spent here, I thought you would have known already, the type of person Nicholas is. He’s cold and unfeeling. But he had his hands all over you trying to sniff out injuries. He even waited for the doctor to give you a check up. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that he cares for you. And I’ve never seen him care for someone like that.”

Layla tilts her head in confusion. All this time, she really didn’t know how to answer their questions, because she herself didn’t understand his actions. She just told herself it must be a wolf thing. Last she checked, he didn’t care about her. He’s just her ex-mate she made an arrangement with.

“He doesn’t care about me.” She says straight forward. “I’m no one to him.”

Tyler and Cody briefly look at each other before they look back at her. They know there has to be a reason for their Alpha to be acting that way with her. But it seems she really doesn’t see things their way. But this is making Tyler more curious. He knows his Alpha won’t say much about it, so he’ll just have to wait and observe.

“Anyways Layla.” Tyler clears his throat. “I was wondering, if you wouldn’t mind helping me out with some paperwork later. With your knowledge in Supernatural Law, you might be able to help me sort out a few things quicker.”

“Oh I don’t mind. I like staying busy.” She giggles.

“Okay then. Just come to my office later then. Okay?”

“Okay.”

As Layla continued with her chores around the house, she couldn’t help notice the constant stares at her. She knows Nick always asks where she is, but she doesn’t understand why Rebecca has to watch her as well. It’s like the woman is trying to look for something.

“Why are you here?” Rebecca asks softly.

“Huh?” Layla looks up from dusting a counter.

“I asked, why are you here?”

“Uhm,…..I’m dusting. But I can come back later if I’m-“

“That’s not what I mean. I want to know why you are here, in this pack.” She folds her arms

“Well,-“ Layla really doesn’t know why she has to answer such obvious questions. “I’m here working as a maid.”

Pfh! “You really have a way with words, don’t you? I want to know what your plans are here. Why did you come to this pack in the first place?”

Layla raises a brow, still not understanding this woman’s concern with her.

“I never really planned to come here, actually. I was just passing through town, with nothing much but a backpack on me. Nick was the one that offered me a job here to help me.”

Rebecca tenses hearing this. “Did you just call him Nick? How dare you. He’s Alpha to you. He’ll probably throw you out if he hears you say that.”

Layla just rolls her eyes at this.

“So you’re here because you need money then?” Rebecca continues. “So how much do you need? I’ll give it to you and you can be on your way.”

“Oh that’s really not necessary. We already made an agreement that I’ll be here for just a month and then I’ll be on my way.”

Rebecca raises a brow. “Just a month? And then you’re gone?” Layla nods. “Good.” She turns and walks away.

Well that was weird. Layla thinks to herself as she gets back to dusting the counters.
