Chapter Chapter A08 - Awake
I awoke in Red’s arms. I had a bandage across my middle and could feel metal flexing to keep my flesh together. Somehow I’d had another treatment? Where?
I felt the pain in only one area, the deep trauma pain of surgery. There were bumps and bruises all over, cuts and abrasions aplenty, but no other surgery pains. I licked his face.
Red was so startled he almost dropped me... well the front half of me. Someone else was carrying the back half.
“Hey there bud. Glad to see you’re on the road to recovery. Be a good ... uh dog and stay quiet. Don’t wake her up. I think she needs the sleep.” He nodded into the small trailer side car that he was aiming me into. I let him slide me in and then I shifted to make myself more comfortable.
“There’s no way that’s a dog Red. You and I both know tha’sa full blood wolf. And you know it’s not legal to breed ‘em, they’re dangerous. You can’t breed out tha’ wild in ’im.” Came the gravely voice, roughened by hard living.
“Chop, I appreciate the help, but I owe him. And I never let a debt go unpaid. Trust me, I’m not planning on breeding him.” Red shut the trailer door. I could still hear through the holes in the top.
“Ok Red, jus’ keep an eye on ’im. We head out in twenty. We’ll ride with you there and back, but you keep this on the whole time.” I glanced out the window and saw a bearish biker hand something black to Red.
“Deal.” Red shook hands with an unusual deep arm grasp.
He came back in a few minutes and opened the trailer door, with a small bowl of water in hand, which I eagerly lapped up. Tank hid confidently behind Red.
“I think they may have drugged her. Hopefully she’ll wake up in a bit. It’s good to see that you are still with us, and recovering quickly. I guess it’s fortunate that they planned to turn you over alive. We really didn’t know who we were dealing with. And Alan...” Red trailed off. She didn’t awaken, even when I licked her nose to tell her about the water.
Red looked down and refilled the bowl. “We got a long way to go today. And the only thing I can think of is to get the information about you two out in the only mass media that is in the hands of the people, and the only way to do that is to go south. Waaaaaaaay south of normal.”
Red set the bowl in the trailer, and looked into my eyes.
“Damn, if you don’t have the most mesmerizing electric blue eyes... Uh, so will you trust me?”
I looked him in the eye for a long moment. He smelled nervous but not afraid.
He was waiting for me to say something.
I nodded.
He exhaled big. “Ok. Now we’re talking.”
