Chapter BIT 100

Chapter 100

“Hey,” Rebecca smiled as she walked over to Sean. “What were you two just talking about?” Sean asked, looking curiously at Rebecca and Ella.

“Ella was just telling me about how Angela saved her life. None of us could believe she’d leave so soon,” Rebecca lied, glaring sharply at Ella.

Ella cleared her throat and wiped the corner of her eye. “This is hard not just for you, Sean, but for me and everyone else who loved Angela. Hang in there, okay?” she said, gently patting Sean’s shoulder before walking away.

Rebecca breathed a sigh of relief, surprised that Ella could be persuaded to cooperate.

“Is there anything I can do for you?” she asked, looking at Sean with genuine empathy. Sean stared blankly at the floor, and moments later, his shoulders shook as he sobbed uncontrollably.

Rebecca was stunned. She embraced Sean and gently patted his back, saying nothing, -allowing him to release his grief.

“She is a good mother, Becky,” Sean sobbed, burying his face in Rebecca’s shoulder.

“I know. She wasn’t just a good mother; she was a good person. She’s no longer in pain, so we have to let her go,” Rebecca said softly.

Sean didn’t reply. He pulled away from Rebecca’s embrace and wiped his tear–streaked face. “Thanks, Becky. I don’t know what’d do if you weren’t here. So even though my mom is gone, please don’t leave me…”

Rebecca swallowed hard, forcing a stiff nod and smile.

The funeral went smoothly, attended by hundreds of Angela’s colleagues. Afterward, Sean got busy talking with his relatives, so Rebecca decided to go inside the house with Lily. She went upstairs and found the place empty except for them. Suddenly, her eyes were drawn to Sean’s room, which was tightly closed, piquing her curiosity.

Cautiously, she opened the door and found a room that looked normal. Initially, she intended to leave quickly, fearing someone might catch her, but when her eyes caught sight of a box under the bed, her curiosity overwhelmed her.

She checked on Lily, who was fast asleep in the stroller, then bent down to pull out the

medium–sized velvet box. Glancing at the door, she opened the box and her widened in shock at the sight of intimate photos of Maggie with a man who seemed to be her lover. The man’s face was crossed out with a red marker, and Maggie’s face with a blue one.

Terrified, Rebecca quickly returned the velvet box under the bed and hurriedly pushed Lily’s stroller out of the room. She looked around and sighed in relief, seeing no one there.

She entered her room and shut the door tightly. After placing Lily in the crib, she quickly sent a message to Max, asking him to find out who Maggie Parker’s lover was.

Just a few minutes later, her phone buzzed.

“Max?

“That man is Matthew Finley,” Max said quickly.

“And where is he now?” Rebecca asked, needing to be sure before deciding to follow Harvey’s plan.

“Dead.”

Rebecca covered her mouth in shock. “When? What happened to him?” she whispered. “The police records say he died in a single–car accident, but you need to see the photo I sent,” Max replied firmly. Rebecca hurriedly opened Max’s message, and her body froze as she saw a photo of Matthew Finley lying dead in his home, with a cross–shaped wound on his face.

“Max…”

“Yes?

I’ll stick with the plan,” Rebecca finally said.

“Good choice. He’s dangerous. You have to leave.”

That night, while they were having dinner in the kitchen, Sean suddenly grabbed Rebecca’s hands, startling her.

“Becky, we need to talk,” Sean said softly.

“Let’s stay here for good. You, me, and Lily. Going back to New York will only bring us more trouble. Here, we can live peacefully. I can manage my clinic, and you can do whatever you want. Isn’t that the best option we have?” he rambled, looking warmly at Rebecca.

Rebecca swallowed nervously. After everything strange she’d discovered about Sean, she no longer dared to stay with him for long

“Well, I’ll think about it,” Rebecca replied, trying to sound convincing. Sean smiled broadly and released her hands.

“I think, eventually, I can melt the ice in my heart,” Sean muttered.

Rebecca frowned. “What do you mean?”

Sean smiled.

“You’re so warm, so I think one day, I might fall in love with you…”

Rebecca felt a sinking sensation in her stomach. She forced a stiff smile, not responding.

Two days later, still at Angela’s house,

“Becky, I have a meeting at the clinic for a few hours. Do you want to come?” Sean asked as he stirred his coffee.

“No, I’ll just take Lily to the nearby café and then head back,” Rebecca replied, trying to sound truthful.

“Okay, I’ll be home before dinner,” Sean said, sipping his coffee before waving goodbye to Rebecca and Lily and leaving the house.

Rebecca quickly finished her breakfast and went to her room. She took all of Lily’s things out of the diaper bag and stuffed all her cash into it. Swiftly, she headed downstairs and bumped into one of the maids.

“Ma’am?”

Rebecca smiled, “I’m going to the café near the clinic,” she said casually. The maid nodded but watched Rebecca closely, searching for anything unusual in her behavior. But she found nothing because Rebecca looked as normal as any mother taking her baby out for a hangout. She only had the diaper bag and the stroller–nothing seemed odd.

A few minutes later, Rebecca arrived at the café just two blocks from the clinic.

“Ma’am, what time should I pick you up?” Sean’s driver asked firmly.

“I’ll just have coffee and a croissant, well, maybe an hour? I’ll call you later,” Rebecca replied casually. She glanced at Sean’s car, feeling confident that the driver would stay in the parking area waiting for her to finish.

Calmly, she entered the busy café but didn’t stop to sit at a table. Instead, she walked straight to the employee door. She opened it and met an old man who directed her to another exit where a car was waiting for her.

“Becky, hurry up!”

“Max! Thank God! Did you bring milk and diapers?” Rebecca exclaimed after getting

into the car.

“Per your orders, Ma’am! Shall we?” Max asked, looking at Rebecca through the rearview mirror.

Rebecca swallowed hard and nodded, “Please…”
